Know your pipes! Metal pipes in your North Houston, Texas home

Whenever a new building project, plumbing remodeling project, or emergency pipe leak repair happens, homeowners in North Houston, Texas are often left curious about the type of pipes used in their homes. In our last blog we described the different types of plastic plumbing pipes. In today’s blog we will give a brief overview on the different types of metal pipes.

While plumbers use a variety of pipes, one of the most common types are metal pipes. There are four different types of metal pipes that have been used over time. Primarily, homes have different types of piping based on cost, but another reason includes age. The oldest type of plumbing is Cast Iron, but this type is used infrequently because it’s heavy and difficult to work with.

The three most common types are Stainless Steel, Galvanized Steel, and Copper, though stainless steel is uncommon in residential homes. Galvanized steel was used extensively in home plumbing in the 1960s, particularly outdoors. The pipes were often buried, and used as supply lines. Galvanized steel is only slightly resistant to corrosion and rust and only has a 40 year life expectancy. This type of piping is usually replaced with copper because copper is highly resistant to corrosion, extremely tolerant to heat, and not prone to pipe leaks. The only negative thing about copper piping is the cost.  An alternative is to use cpvc or pvc pipe which is plastic, less expensive, and last longer depending on repair. See our last blog on plastic pipes for details.

Lead pipes are no longer used because lead can leach into the water supply and cause significant health problems.
